Wildfires in California are getting more intense, and different types of oak trees respond differently. At Hastings Natural History Reservation, students studied how three common oak species responded to the 2024 Piney Fire. They found that coast live oaks fared best and were able to sprout new growth even after serious burning, while blue oaks and valley oaks struggled to recover and died more frequently following severe fire damage.
