A mule deer browses the sagebrush steppe of the UC Nature’s Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory. The velvet encasing its antlers supplies the nutrients required to regrow this tissue every year. The velvet is shed once the autumn rut competition for females begins. Image credit: Krikor Andonian
